by Rachel Davis

The Bancroft Betterment Corporation and the John G. Neihardt Foundation are sponsoring the program Indian Givers: Lewis and Clark and Their Presents to the Indians in the West 1804-1806. On November 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Neihardt State Historical Site in Bancroft.

The program is a partnership of the Missouri Humanities Council and the Nebraska Humanities Council as part of the “Lewis and Clark Meet the West” series.

Lewis and Clark succeeded in exploring much of the West and its many native peoples between 1804 and 1806 because they transported and dispensed and expensive array of “ Indian Presents”, such as glass, cloth, and metal items of European manufacture. Samples of these important objects and artifacts will be displayed and described to provide a fresh three-dimensional perspective on the Lewis and Clark expedition

The speaker will be Dr. Fred Fausz, history professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Dr. Fausz is a nationally renowned expert in European- Indian relations from the 17th through 19th centuries, and has consulted on several film documentaries, including Kevin Costner’s 500 Nations.

The program is free and open to the public.
